PERMIT TO BUILD NEW CREMATORIUM IN AUCKLAND REFUSED
Auckland, April 19. Advice that the proposed new crematorium at Waikumete Cemetery will have to be deferred in the meantime because of the shortage of materials has been received by the town clerk, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby, from the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple. Following unsuccessful attempts by the City Council to obtain the Building Controller’s sanction for the work, a letter was sent to the Minister asking him to authorise a permit. In his reply the Minister said the matter had been considered by the Building Control Advisory Committee, which had decided that the proposal would have to be deferred In the meantime. The information which had been submitted In support of the application had been carefully considered. and he assured the council that the only reason for withholding permission to proceed with the work at. present was the serious shortage of building materials. He also referred to the huge volume of essential work which had had to be deferred.
