BERKETT’S STABLE HAS THREE WINS

CONCLUDING DAY AT THE MANAWATU TROTS

Weather conditions at Awapuni were unfavourable for the concluding day of the Manawatu Trotting Club's meeting, steady rain setting in after the third race ana continuing for the greater part of the afternoon. As a result the track began to cut up, but the going was not really bad. The attendance was good under the circumstances, and the club did well to record a turnover of £30,747 10s, as against £32,783 for the corresponding day last year. The aggregate for the meeting was £56,932, as compared with £52,598 10s last year, an increase of £4333 10s. Favourites won three events, Including the Manawatu Trotting Cup and the President’s Handicap, but there were double-figure dividends for four of the winners and in some Instances generous place returns were made. In the principal event, the Manawata Trotting Cup, the ImplacableMinoru bracket, from the successful L. F. Berkett stable, was installed as favourite choice. Berkett having already provided winners in the first two events. Minoru went out to make the pace but was joined by Baby Grand, Berkett being content to let Minoru trail Baby Grand for the greater part of the journey. Then Implacable ran up to tackle Baby Grand over the c including stages and eventually win by a head. Minoru, nearly three lengths back, managed to get third mcney by a narrow margin over the last-finishing Lone Raider. With the bracketed stablemates first and third backers received a generous place return. Baby Grand came out again for the concluding event, the President’s Handicap, in which he was bracketed with Gung-Ho. Backers were right in supporting the combination, for the bracketed pair finished first and second after leading practically throughout. They were followed home by the little-fancied Whcnako, Lone Raider again being fourth. L. F. Berkett started the day well by winning the opening event, the Awapuni Handicap, with King’s Ransom, who never looked like being beaten. The runner-up, Titoki, paid close on double figures. The Ladies’ Bracelet was run In two divisions, the Washdyke-trained Calworth winning the first to return over a score, with the pacemaker, Playboy, second. In the other division Berkett’s representative, Pinto, led most of the way to win handily from Commotion. Pinto was one of a bracket of four. The Epsom-trained Grattan Star got a lucky run on the rails in the last 50 yards of the Pohangina Handicap to bring off a surprise at over a score. He was only a neck in front of Amber Light and Kilcash, whom the judge could not separate, and almost in line were Hopeful and the favourite, Stop Press. Little Je?.n never put. a* foot wrong in the McDonc.l l Handicap, staying on to win handsomely at double figures from a well-backed pair in Onerous and Worthy Robert. Divisions were avoided in the Longburn Hand’can. there being sufficient withdrawals but there was a mild surprise when Anl r im HpII ’-ch nicely from Exaggerate and Playboy. Fair Play, a winner al. New Plymouth and Hawera, won handily in the Stewards’ Handicap from the consistent Kilct'sh and a rank outsider in Glen Murray.
