BRITISH AGRICULTURE

OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE ’ FOREIGN EXCHANGE London, March 18 British agriculture could contribute by 1950-51 £80,000,000 towards saving foreign exchange if, among otner things, there was no undue shortage of labour, if a substantial degree of control was still exercised, over the volume and type of farming, and if the farmers vJ.re assured ot a market at reasonable prices fixed in advance, according to a White Paper issued to-day. It adds that if sufficient imported feeding stuffs were available the contribution might be higher. Estimating the increased food consumption at £80,000,000 a year, the White Paper says that additional foreign exchange to that extent would be required unless home agriculture was expanded above the pre-war volume to an equivalent extent.
