BAKERS CONCERNED AT ACUTE SHORTAGE OF SALT
MINISTER PREDICTS IMPROVED SHIPPING POSITION (P A.) Dunedin. March 19. The narrow margin of salt supplies on which the country’s bakehouses were operating was commented on at the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Bakers and Pastrycooks, now sitting in Dunedin. There was, it was stated, a serious shortage in certain parts of New Zealand, and messages from Australia indicated that the position had deteriorated. The crux of the situation was that the 25 per cent, reduction in inter-colonial shipping had accentuated the shortage to such an extent that lecently only '.he arrival of a ship on which space had been specially allocated to salt, kept bakeries operating. __ “Departmental officers concerned apparently don’t realise that you cannot continue bread manufacture unless you have salt,” commented one delegate. The matter was left in the hands of the New Zealand Council for urgent action. Later In the day a telegram arrived from Lite Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr. D. J. Sullivan) stating that the importers had advised that the position had been covered. Shipping, the Minister stated, appeared to be the main problem, but he considered that the position would improve in the future.
