“ACT OF GOD.” SAYS MR SEMPLE AT GREYMOUTH
(P.A.) Auckland, March 19. “It is an act of God and we must be patient in the meantime. I can’t do anything to help the position by sitting in my office in Wellington. I have business to conduct in other parts of the country and have left full instructions in Wellington.” This was the statement by the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) from Greymouth yesterday afternoon when he was interviewed by telephone from Auckland.
Mr. Semple said it was years since New Zealand had such a phenomenally dry spell—he could not make rain.
Everything possible was being done to keep industry running and farms in production.
