SUCCESSFUL TARANAKI SERIES

The Taranaki autumn racing circuit, [which was concluded at Hawera on 'Saturday, was one of the most successful series of meetings ever held in [that province. All. three racing clubs 'showed a substantial rise in totalisator returns on last year’s iigures. The Opunake Racing Club, racing on the kgmont Racing Club s course at Hawera, handled £4J,021 10s, an increase of £11,419 on last season’s turnover. The Taranaki Jockey Club, who raced on Anniversary Day week-end at New Plymouth, were again successful in topping the six-figure mark. The public invested £101,006 during the wo days’ racing, an increase ol £8639 on the previous season, rhe Egmont Racing Club, who opened the circuit on Feoruary 22 and neld the concluding day on March 1, were well in advance of the 1946 season in handling £98,403 10s, compared with £88,762. The aggregate totalisator investments tor the live days’ racing amounted to £239,431, an increase Oi £29,453

The district clubs, in keeping with the times, increased their stakes ana the total stake-money competed lor during tlie live days’ racing amounted to £14,300.’ The Taranaki Cup, £1250, was the richest stake on the circuit and the winner was the hardy campaigner Bramble Song, owned and trained at Te Rapa.
