FOUR PERISH IN BLAZING SKIP

NORTH SEA TRAGEDY London, March 14 The captain and three members ol the crew of the coaster Empire Jonquil (369 tons) were trapped below deck and died in the flames when a cargo of coke caught lire in the North Sea.

A trawler chased the blazing ship for 2i hours to save the remaining four members of the crew who vainly tried to rescue their trapped comrades. One survivor, squeezing through a porthole to escape, saw his shipmates being burned to death.

The trawler was forced to chase the Empire Jonquil because the latter’s engines were going full steam ahead, the crew being unable to reach the bridge or the engine-room Io shut them off. Four survivors jumped to saftey when the trawler got alongside.
