PIPE BANDS BETTER Al TENDED THAN WERE BRASS BANDS
Paid admissions for the drummajors’ displays in the pipe bands’ national championships at Cook’s Gardens on Sunday exceeded by over 400 those for the quickstep display at the brass bands’ contests the previous week. As, however, there were about 400 fewer pipe bandsmen than there were brass bandsmen, the respective total attendances would be about the same. For the drum-major’s display on Sunday there were 11,506 paid admissions, as against 11,088 lor the brass bands’ quickstep. If to these figures there are added the numbers of bandsmen, officials and guests present, the total number present in each case can be safely estimated at over 12,000. The size of the crowd which attended the brass bands’ quickstep was claimed as a record for Cook’s Gardens and the totgl attendance lor the drum-majors’ display at least equalled that record gathering. However, there were more Wanganui and district residents present to hear and see the pipers and drummers than lor the brass bands.
