Although th G bush of the river valley and tne vast hinterland of the city is receding, the art of the woodsman still live s in that wide district. This is emphasised by the very keen choppng events staged each year at the Parikino sports. People in the city are fascinated by the deftly handled axes. These events proved very popular in Wanganui during the recent carnival, and at Parikino, in a near approach to the natural surroundings to the woodsmen, the chopping is even more appealing. There are live chopping events. The open cldsses, 12-inch and 14-inch standing, respectively. All have drawn big entries.
