TWO THOUSAND POUND ART UNION PRIZE COMES TO WANGANUI
A carpenter employed by the Wanganui City Council, a man on the eve of retirement, Mr. George B. Earles, Jellicoe Street, won the lirst prize in the "I Must Be In” art union, which was drawn in Wellington yesterday morning. The official list of major prize-win-ners, by Press Association, Is:—
First Prize: 179,548, G. B. E., Wanganui.
Second Prize: 197,610, "Nan,” 1 Valley Road, Waimauku. Third Prize: 48,087, “Mr. Speed,” Balclutha.
Fourth Prize: 25,637, “Cretan Magnussin,” Rua Road, Dannevirke. Fifth Prize: 182,261, R. A. Lusson, 75 Taylor Street, Blockhouse Bay, Auckland.
Minor prize-winners in the Wanganui district are:
£lO Prizes: 178,260, “In the Soup," Marton; 29,495, "Lucky Me,” Okola; 121,597, "Bev,” Flockhouse Station, Bulls; 27,904, B. E. Santoft, Marton. £5 Prizes: 179,987, "Scotty," Kiwi Cabs, Wanganui; 27,873, "Nil Desperandum," Rangitikei butt; 177,710, “Marcus,” Wanganui; 27,657, Mr. HB. S., Wanganui.
Mr. Earles has been in the City Council’s employ for 26 years and was engaged on alteration work in the city engineer's office (St. Hill Street) when the news came through that he had won the first prize.
