TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MR. J. CRICHTON
One of the best loved bandsmen in the Dominion was the late Mr. James Crichton, of the Wanganui Garrison Band, who died ii 1942. Many visiting bandsmen in the city for the present contest remembered him and his close association with band contests over many years. “We think there should be some fitting tribute paid to such a great band leader, whose very soul lived for music," said a noted bandsman yesterday. He contacted a number of bandsmen, and it was decided that they will meet at the Grand Hotel at 10 o'clock to-mor-row (Friday) morning and proceed to the Wanganui Old Cemetery and place a wreath of Mr. Crichton’s resting place. The Woolston Band, under the baton of Mr. R. J. Estail, one of Mr. Crichton's closest friends and keenest competitors over manylong years of band contesting, will play a hymn at the graveside. All who played under the baton of Mr. Crichton will take part and other bandsmen are invited to be present.
