FAILURE TO FURNISH TAXATION RETURNS FOR POOR TEARS
Fines totalling £l7 were imposed by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesteruay, after Henry John Simpson, taxidriver; Taihape, who did not appear, had been charged with tailing to furnish returns or income for lour successive years. It was stated that returns had not oeen furnished, as required by law, in 1943, 1944, 1945 and 1946. Court costs amounted to £2 and Crown solicitor’s fees totalled £4 14s 6d. Mr. N. R. Bain, who prosecuted on behalf of the Commissioner of 'f axes, said he was in possession ol a copy of the letter which defendant’s solicitor had written to the Court, investigations had shown that the taxation owing over the period in question was £1034 11s. Defendant knew his obligations. His income was assessed at Detween £7OO and £BOO per annum. “This is a case that the department views somewhat seriously, ’ Mr. Bain added. Under the regulations the penalty must not exceed £lOO, but a minimum of £2 was fixed. The magistrate commented tha't defendant had stated that he was paying off his creditors, but his debt to the Crown should have come first. Defendant was fined £2 on one charge and £5 on each of the other three.
