ELECTION OF SPORTS QUEEN DEFERRED FOR ONE WEEK

To give all sports organisations the privilege of nominating a queen to represent sports in the torthcomuig queen carnival, the meeting convened on Thursday night decided to defer the election of a queen until the next meeting on Monday, March 3. In the meantime, clubs are to be asked to submit their nomination within one week to the sub-committee comprising Messrs. A. Gracie, R. Stantiall and R. Darrow. The election will be by secret ballot. The attendance at Thursday night’s meeting was not as large as anticipated, being affected by several counterattractions in the district. The convener, Mr. Alex Gracie presided. It was explained by the convener

that the Sports Society had developed into a large organisation embracing all sports and not just a tew. The object of the society was to assist sports bodies financially and otherwise in acquiring grounds, if necessary, and purchasing equipment. The Government, too, were sponsoring the movement to foster sport and it was up to all sports’ organisations to assist in the project. It was hoped to raise 12000 by means of the proposed queen carnival.

The first priority on the society’s carnival funds, said Mr. is. V. cai,.,.., chairman of tne society, would be to discharge the debt on the Druid’s Hall, which the society recently acquired lor later conversion into a gymnasium. Once the hall had been paid for and fitted up as a gymnasium, the society would be pleased to assist clubs in any project they had in mind. It was the intention of the society to sponsor one big effort each year to build up the society’s funds.

“If everyone supports this society I believe it will become one of the major societies in the district and will do a vast amount of good,” said Mr. F. J. Christensen, who stressed the point that the public should be told that the funds were first for the gymnasium and then for general sports purposes and not for just one or two clubs which had already lodged applications for assistance. An erroneous impression had been formed by many residents.

Main officers were elected as follows:—Chairman, Mr. A. Gracie, secretary, Mr. R. Stantiall; treasurer, Mr. R, Darrow. The election of an executive committee was held over until the next meeting, when it is hoped to have a large representation. ■ Town Queen. Supporters of the Town Queen are to meet in the Druids’ Hall on Monday night, when a committee will be set up and consideration will be given to the election of a Queen to represent Town in the carnival. All interested in assisting in the campaign are invited to attend. PERSONAL.
