OPEN PAIRS BOWLING TOURNAMENT WON BY LIVINGSTONE

F. Livingstone and A. George, of Onehunga were the victorious ’ combination in the Open Pairs Tournament concluded on the, St. John’s green by the Wanganui Bowling Centre yesterday. Post sectional play took place in the morning, and the final, betwen the Onehunga pair and P. Mailway and F. Onehunga pair and P. Mailman and r’. Beard, of Gonville, was played jn the afternoon before a large gathering of spectators. Perfect weather condition prevailed for the concluding day’s Play.

Mr. C. H Clinkard, president of the Centre, congratulated the winners and runners up in providing such an excellent game and presented trophies. Results:

First Round.— Babarfald and Paton (Wanganui) 18, Beard and Mailman (Gonville) 19; W. Cook and Tilley (Gonville) 33, Eade and Steel (Wanganui) 21. Second Round.—Beard and Mailman (Gonville) 23, Ease and Steel (Wanganui) 9; V. Cooke and Goodey (Wanganui) 22, Stringer and W. Pepper (St. Johns) 15; Tumilty and H. Stewart (Wanganui East 18. White and Plummer (Wanganui) 20: George and Livingston (Onehunga) 18, Gould and Webby (Wanganui East) 17. Semi-Finals.—Mailman 25, Gooduy 17; Plummer 16, Livingstone 25. Final.—F. Beard and P. Mailman (Gonville) 18, T. A. George and F. Livingstone (Onehunga) 26. NOTES ON THE PLAY In the eliminating post-section round Faton and Mailman had an interesting game, being on even terms several times. On the last end, when each skip had one bowl to play, the score was 19-17 to Mailman. Paton lay with his last two on the head. He was unfortunate in slightly shifting kitty, which deprived him of a point. Steel, being behind all the way when he played Tilley, made a wonderful recovery on the 19th by securing the possible of six, making the score 19-17 to him. He scored on the last two ends. On the 17th H. Stewart and Plummer were 14 all, and the 18th brought a single to Stewart. On the last three ends Plummer secured a four and two singles. Great interest was centred on the Livingstone-Webby game. Four to Livingstone on the 19th made the score 17-14 against him, but on the remaining two ends Livingstone notched a brace and a single, bringing the score to 17-all. In the extra end Livingstone secured a single. In the semi-final between Goodey and Mailman the score was 19-7 to the latter with 12 ends played. A full hand on the 13th and a single on the 14th to Goodey improved the appearance of the game, but after this Mailman secured six points to Goodey’s four, the game finishing in favour of Mailman. In the other semi-final, which was between Plummer and Livingstone, the score was 11 all with nine ends gone. Four to Livingstone on the 17th put him seven in front, 22-15, leaving Plummer with too big a task to overtake. THE FINAL GAME This game was fought out between Mailman, of Gonville, and Livingstone, from Onehunga. The latter started by scoring five on the first three ends, while on the next three ends Mailman put on seven points. On the 10th the board read 12 all, but a brace to Mailman on the 11th put him two in front. On the 12th, Livingston came to light with a handy four, and singles gn the 13th and 14th gave him the lead, 18-14. Two to Mailman on the , 15th left Livingstone two in front, and with a single on the 16th and two to Mailman on the 17th left him but ©ne up and four ends to play. On the 'next three ends Livingstone put on seven points, making him the winner of the tournament. The 21st end was not played.
