MINISTER PRAISES WORK BEING DONE

MANY LEAKS STILL TO BE PLUGGED (P A.) Wellington. Jan. 29 “I am much surprised by the work carried out by the officers in charge of operations, the ship’s crew and those others who are helping in the salvage of the Wanganella.” said the Minister of Marine (Mr. O’Brien) this evening, following his visit in the afternoon to the stranded vessel. After tributes Io the particular officers on the ship, and ashore, he said many men had worked till they were exhausted. “Even after careful scrutiny it was found that when air was forced into the holds there would be several leaks, and this was evident in No. 1 hold, wherefrom small leaks were discovered. These will have to be traced and plugged before an effort can be made to float the vessel off the reef. Taking everything into consideration, there is every hope of the ship being salvaged in two or three days, if the weather stars line.”
