SANDERS CUP YACHTING CONDITIONS JUST DEPRIVE AUCKLAND OF WIN BY 3MIN.
(PA.) Auckland, Jan. 21. Auckland was decidedly unlucky in the two attempts to sail the second Sanders Cup race to-day, when Tight i variable winds, dying away to flat calms, caused the abandonment of the morning race with over a round to go, at which time Auckland had a lead of approximately 4min. from Otago, with South Canterbury, Canterbury, Wellington, Wanganui, and North Auckland following. Superior seamanship by Auckland enabled it to take the lead on the first round in a st cad v sailing breeze. At the second attempt in the afternoon, although fluky conditions prevailed for the second and third rounds of the course, the Auckland boat again established a lead, but had the mortification of being within three minutes of the finishing line and 20 minutes ahead of North Auckland in second place, when the rsce was abandoned by the operation of the three-hour limit.
