BRITISH SHIPYARDS BUSIER THAN FOR MANY YEARS
52 PER CENT. OF WORLD’S SHIPS BEING BUILT Recd. 8 p..m. London, Jan. 21. British shipyards are busier than they have been since shortly after the First World War, and are now building 52 per cent, of the world’s ships. Lloyds’ shipbuilding return shows a total gross tonnage under construction at December 31, 1946, was 1,937,000 tons, which has not been exceeded since March 31, 1922, and is nearly 325,000 greater than at December 31, 1945 and 62,000 greater than June 30, 1946. About one quarter of the present construction is for registration or sale abroad. The tonnage Luildi:«g for abioad at December 41, 1946, totalled 1,741,000, though the figures for Danzig, Germany, Japan. Poland and Russia are not available, and those for France incomplete. Of the 167,000 tons building in the Dominions, Canada account:', for 110,000 tons.
