SEVERAL ROAD USERS FINED FORBREACHES OF REGULATIONS

Several cases where road users had committed breaches of the traffic and transport regulations were brought before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday. Inspector W. Wilson, representing the Transport. Department, prosecuted, and in one instance said that complaints had been made by the Wanganui County Council regarding excessive speeds and heavy loads on county roads. W. B. Parkes, Ltd., carriers, Marton, were fined £3 10s, costs 10s. for operating a lorry which carried a load In excess of that for which it was licensed.

Inspector Wilson said that the load was one ton overweight, the difference in fees being £2 3s. In 1945 defendants were fined £2, and in 1946 a penalty of £3 was imposed. Tasman Anthony John Wlnwood, charged that on November 14 he permitted to be used a vehicle which did not conspicuously display the name and business address of the licence*, was fined 10s, costs 12s. Two motor-cyclists, Robert Milne and George Reginald Wilson, who were followed by the inspector along No. 2 Line after motor-cycle sports a: Matarawa on October 26. were each fined 30s, costs 12s, for exceeding the speed limit of 30 miles an hour in a restricted area. In addition. Milne was fined £l. costs 12s. for riding a motor-cycle at night when it was not equipped with the prescribed lights. Inspector Wilson said that at 8.30 pm. on October 25 he was on patrol duty at Kaitoke when Milne passed 1 him, travelling in the direction of Wanganui. He had no lights and traffic was heavy at the time because of the Labour Day holiday approaching. On the following day motor-cycle sports were held at Matarawa and competitors were warned through their association that when returning from the sporty they must not exceed the speed limits, Inspector Wilson added. When he followed the two defendants along No. 2 Line from Matarawa

to the top of Dune Hill, however, their speed was 43 miles an hour in a restricted area. They had no excuse for speeding and Milne’s lights were still defective. He had done nothing about them since being stopped tne previous night. On two charge* of replacing the windscreens of jeeps with windscreens which were not of safety glass, Thomas William Halkett was fined 10s costs 10s, on each charge. James Victor Henderson, charged | with driving a motor truck along the I main highway south of Wanganui at : a speed. exceeding 30 miles an hour, was fined 30s, costs 12s. Inspector I Wilson said he saw the truck near i Wangaehu and followed it toward Wanganui, the speed being 40 miles an hour. I.i rep'y to the magistrate.
