FUTURE OF THE JFORCE TO BE DISCUSSED
TERM OF SERVICE EXPIRING (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 8. The future of the J-Force will be discussed by Cabinet, after the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) returned to Wellington, said the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) when asked this evening about the New Zealand occupation force in Japan. The Primp Minister, who at present is on holiday in the South Island, is expected to resume his official duties on Monday. When the force for Japan was recruited early last year it was stated that volunteers were being accepted on the basis of service for a period of 18 months or prior discharge. It would be the aim to limit the total service to 12 months, with a minimum of six months’ service in Japan; but this would depend on shipping facilities. Last month it was reported that a reduction in the United Kingdom forces in Japan was being considered.
In commenting on this. Mr. Jones said the future of the New Zealand forces in Japan was still to be considered. If the original terms of enlistment are adhered to, the force now in Japan is due for discharge in New Zealand before the end of this year, even if it serves the maximum term of 18 months.
