FAREWELL DANCE. (0.C.) Mangaweka, Nov. 13. Mr. John Devine was the guest o£ honour at a dance held in the Oddfellow's Hall last Friday evening. With about a hundred present despite the bad weather and slips on the roads the evening went with a swing to the music of Ron Marks and his band, and Mr. Martin Ncsdale acted as M.C. After supper, which was a credit to the ladies committee, the president, Mr. C. Merritt, in the course of a short speech thanked all those for coming along and particularly those who had helped in so many ways. He then went on to explain that the dance was being held in honour of the club's secretary, who was shortly io depart for Auckland. Mr. Devine had done an extremely good job as secretary and the club was most grateful for the interest he had taken as to its welfare. He concluded by wishing him every success in his new life. Mr. J. Sherlock, vice-president of the club, also spoke, saying he wished to endorse Mr. Merritt. On behalf of the Football Club, Mr. Nesdale said a few words, expressing the sentiments of the footballersand paid tribute to John's sportsmanship on the Held of football. This was followed by musical honours after which Mr. Merritt made a presentation on behalf of the Cricket Club. In reply, John said he wished to thank the previous speakers for their kind words and that he would follow the fortunes of the local cricketers with interest? Dancing concluded at 1 p.m. PERSONAL. The many friends of Mr. F. Pederson will be pleased to know that he has now returned home alter several months in hospital in Palmerston North. When attending his first Town Board meeting last evening he was welcomer by the chairman, who hoped that his health would continue to improve, TOWN BOARD. In the absence of the chairman Mr. K. Dowling presided over the meeting of the Town Board held last night. The engineer's report staled that. 540,000 gallons were pumped (luring the month, and that the power was off for two hours on November I) owing to a main line failure. The correspondence included a letter from Mr. P. South, requesting a loan to connect his house with the town sewerage, and this was granted, the agreement to be drawn up by the board's solicitor The Inspector of Police. Wanganui. sent a letter asking that, repairs to Kawakawa Street, used by the local constable for his car, be carried out. The clerk was instructed to reply that such repairs were done prior to the receipt of the letter.
