SURVEY OF COASTLINE WILL TAKE 20 YEARS MORE TO COMPLETE
(P.A.) Auckland, Nov. 6. An announcement that it seemed likely that an Admiraltv survey ship would be sent to New Zealand in the very near future to resume charting and survey work begun before the war by H.M.S. Endeavour was made by Mr. W. C. Smith, secretary of the Marine Department, at the annual Harbours’ Conference. The resumption of the work had beer, urged in a remit from the Bluff board. •The Marine Department had taken the matter up immediately the war ended, said Mr. Smith, and plans for the work were now being prepared. He pointed out, however, the estimated time to complete the coastal survey was 20 years. Mr. T. F. Doyle (Bluff), who urged the remit should nevertheless still go forward, said he was perturbed to Idam that the work ’would take 20 years to complete. It should have begun where it was most urgently needed, in the South Island, and not ihrthe North Island. Many overseas shipmast(rs .were vpry concerned at the age of New Zealand charts and the survey should be Undertaken as soon as possible. The rettiit was carried
