WANGANUI’S LARGEST ART EXHIBITION WILL OPEN TO DAY
WATER COLOURS PROMINENT To-day the largest exhibition cl pictures and craft work ever presented in the city of Wanganui will be opened by the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, Sir Patrick Duff, at 2 p.m., in the Sarjeant Gallery. Tne exhibits total some 300 and the individual artists contributing thereto number 50. These are drawn from all parts of the Dominion and in that respect make a most catholic body. There are many styles, but watercolours suitable for hanging in the home dominate. This is in accord with the general trend in England, Australia, and elsewhere in this Dominion." “It is very gratifying to the City Council to see such good work done and such excellent use made ol the Sarjeant Gallery” said Councillor G. P. Hawkins, chairman of the Gallery Committee, after an inspection of the exhibition '“The organisation has been
very efficient and the effort reflects credit on those who have undertaken the task of presenting the exhibition to the public. Tiie City Council is anxious that the public shall have the fullest value and enjoyment from this line civic possession, and will do all in its power to further the cultural endeavours within the city. I have every confidence that the exhibition will have the success it deserves. “It is gratifying to see so many local scenes depicted.’’ Among the local subjects dealt with are the “Two Spires" Imlay Wharf, the Collegiate School Chapel and Buildings, the Wanganui River, Views from Queens Park, Kukutu Lane, the Town Wharf, South Beach, Ruapehu from Newman's Farm, the Town Bridge, Lake Tarawa, Reid's Farm, Makirikiri. Hilltop, Dalgety's, Makirikiri, By Hatrlck's Slip (2), Kaitoke Valley <2), Waitotara River and Kai Iwi Beach.
