GOSSIP CORNER

George Sanders and his wife (the liltie-known Elsie Larson) have decided to divorce, after a year’s separation. Said George: “We have separated so many times that this is the one thing left for us to do.” George is living at Hollywood with his brother, the Conway on the Falcon film series. Marriage is over, too, for Ann Sothern and Robert Sterling. They have parted again, say this time that it is final. The current, housing shortage has driven Victor Mature to live in his studio dressing-room, on the Fox lot. He sleeps, cooks, and entertains in these quarters. Ono night the janitor left a note on Matures door: “The management dislikes cooking in dress-ing-rooms.” Next morning Mature added a postscript: “So do I, but brother, times are tough.” Jack Holt's daughter, Jennifer, married actor Billy Bakewell in the garden at Lew Ayres’ home. Lew Ayres himself acted as best man. Other family items: Billie Burke's daughter, Patricia, has a new baby son, Robert, making Billie a three-times grandmother. The John Paynes (she is Gloria de Haven) are reconciled, and extremely happy, they say. The Alan Hales celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary with an open-house party. Ellen Drew, who heretofore has played straight leads, will essay her first “other woman" role in Columbia's “Johnny O'clock," in which she will compete with Evelyn Keyes for Dick Powell's attentions. Others previously announced for the cast included Lee J. Cobh, Jim Bannon, and John Kellogg. Miss Drew recently completed the feminine lead in "Sing While You Dance.”
