SALES TAX REMOVAL REDUCES CUSTOMS REVENUE IN WANGANUI

Sales tax removal is now showing its effect, and the amount collected in sales tax by the Wanganui office of the Customs Department during October is tiie lowest it has been for many months. Nevertheless it is nearly £4OGO greater than the amount collected in the corresponding month in 1945, which is indicative of the increased amount of business.

The total customs revenue during October was exactly £40,000, which, although a substantial increase over the £32,006 of October, 1945, is the lowest figure since early this year, and well down on the record amount of about lout: months ago. Customs duties have increased by £3114 from the £9477 of a year ago. The greater release of petrol, which is subject to customs duty of Bd, was the main contributor to this inciease. Petrol duty at 6d per gallon increased by £1376 to £6858. The sales tax increase was by £3954. A substantial decrease (£457) was shown in the beei duty. Details of the revenue, with those of October, 1945, shown for comparative purposes, are as follows:
