CARTLOAD OF WATER-MELONS FOR OLD SHIRT
(P-A.) Auckland, Oct. 31. “1 have had natives offer me a cartload of watermelons in exchange lor an old shirt,” said Mr. F. L. Ilolahia, deputy harbourmaster at Nukualofa, referring this morning to statements that fruit and vegetables imported from the islands could maintain supplies on the New Zealand market in the off-season. Mr. Ilolahia, who is visiting Auckland, said that Tonga could far exceed the quantities of fruit being exported if quotas were lifted and shipping space were available. He said that Nukualofa port could supply, if ship space were forthcoming, at least 3000 watermelons per trip. Pineapple and banana exports could be increased greatly. Because of the small quotas fruit growers were not making a maximum effort.
