SUPERLATIVE GOLF
Superlative golf by Shaw against Murray in the professional final and a titanic struggle over 36 holes by Glading and Woon in the quarterfinal of the amateur championship were highlights to-day. There were other notable games, but the Glading-Woon match, which provided the best golf of the tournament, was a classic and finished on the 36th. green, when Woon missed a short putt. The game was followed by a big gallery. Glading won the third hole, but Woon got that back with a 2 at the fourth, but lost the next two. Both were playing brilliant golf, the cards out reading:— Glading: 44435453 3—35 Woon: 44526553 3—37 Glading electrified the spectators when he holed out from a bunker at the tenth. At the next Woon rolled down a long putt. They were one under par tor the next four holes. Woon tnen had to negotiate a stymie. Woon lost the seventeenth and when they went on the 18th. tee, Glading required 3 for a 69. He lost that hole, but was 2 up. The cards in to lunch read:— Glading: 34354444 5—36 Woon: 53354445 4-36 Glading's round would equal 71 and Woon’s 73. The golf in the afternoon was the most brilliant of the tournament. When the match finished the green was rimmed >vith spectators, and the result depended upon the last putt, which Glading sank after Woon had missed one just a fraction longer. Woon was unlucky. He hit the better second, but the ball pitched in a shallow bunker and rolled close to the outside edge. Woon missed his putt on the second in the afternoon and was 3 down. Glading missed another on the next. Woon got the second hole back at the sixth. The figures out were: Glading: 44535553 3—37 Woon: 45435453 3-36 Woon was one down at the turn, but squared the match with a 3 at the tenth. Glading won the eleventh and the long 13th. with a birdie.
