LABOUR SHORTAGE STILL ACUTE

P.A.) Auckland, Oct. 30. . The difficulty of obtaining labour for public works was again stressed at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board when tenders lor construction of two portions of a branch sewer were received. Only two contractors submitted prices for the work, which is to drain areas in Mount Albert, Avondale, and Mount Roskill. When the contracts were advertised six firms took plans and specifications, said the board’s chief engineer, Mr. W. H. Watkins. One firm submitted a tender for both jobs, another lor one lof the jobs, and others said they could not. tender because of the labour shortage. From that it appeared firms were not much better off than the board. The tenders were the first that had been called by the board since 1936. One tender totalling £14,828 was received for a major contract which had been estimated to cost £17,796. It will be accepted if found to be in order. Two tenders for part of the work which was estimated to cost £‘•s6o were referred to a sub-commit-tee.
