Reed. 10 p.m. New York, Oct. 30. Speaking as one who has spent some of the most strenuous years of his life fighting against the British Empire in its old form. Field-Marshal Smuts declared the British Commonwealth pattern might be the type of Government which would best suit the twin ideals of freedom and peace for which the world is seeking Field-Marshal Smuts added that the British Commonwealth of the 20th century was very different from that of the 19th century. If Europe, or a large part of Europe, could form a union in which constitutional principles of the British Commonwealth could prevail, the world might see that continent emerge from its co~ fusions and miseries, and realise > ,s freedom and peace in a renaissance more glorious than ever before.
