TWO BOMBS EXPLODE OUTSIDE BRITISH EMBASSY IN ROME
Reed. 11.30 p.m. Rome, Oct. 31. Two heavy time bombs exploded outside the British Embassy early this morning, tearing a gaping hole in the building. An unconfirmed report states that one Italian passer-by was killed and three injured The Ambassador’s quarters were extensively damaged, but no Embassy personnel were injured. Nearby buildings were damaged, and windows were broken within a half-mile radius of the Embassy. The two bombs, in two black suitcases, exploded simultaneously.
The Italian Foreign Minister, Signor Nenni, told newspapermen that the suitcases were wrapped in a red flag, bearing Polish words meaning “danger.”
A security officer at the Embassy said two patrolling Carabinieri found a large case near the front door of the Embassy labelled “mine.” As one went to report the discovery the bomb exploded. The other was buried unde> falling debris.
