ANOTHER FRENCH WIN IN ENGLAND
CAMBRJDGESHIRE STAKES VICTORY Recd. 8.30 p.m. London, Oct. 3L Still another of the big races of the English racing season has been won by a French horse, Sayani winning the Cambridgeshire yesterday to complete a big French double, Monsieu I’Amiral having previously won the Cesarewitch. Following is the result of the Cambridgeshire Stakes, a sweepslakes; 9 furlongs. SAYANI (Fair Copy— Pei fume, 9.4 \V. R. Johnstone) 1 CLARO (Colombo—Clovelly) 2 TORONTO (Pheroshah—Felicitas) 3 Thirty-four started. Won by a head, with a head between second and third. Time, 1.54 1-5. Savani's weight of 9.4 was a record for the race. His rider is identical with the Australian jockey “’Togo” Johnstone. Sayani thus brought off another French triumph by completing the second leg of the CesarewitchCambridgeshire double. Monsieur I’Amiral having carried off the Cesarewitch earlier. The "Daily Mail” racing correspondent estimated that Sayani’s Cambridgeshire win and Monsieur ’Amiral’s Cesaiewitch victory a fortnight ago enabled French backers to take at least £500,0u0 from English bookmakers. Sayani won at 25 to 1 and Monsieur I’Amiral at 33 to 1, making an 883 to 1 “double.” • The correspondent quotes one big firm of bookmakers as saying: “If these French successes continue they are going to get all the racing money in England." Another said: “It is one of the most disastrous Cambridgeshires we have known.” Since June French horses have won 21 laces in England and have taken over £38,002 in stake-money. English horses next year will be eligible to participate in most of the French classics, including the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club), the French Oaks (Prix de Diane), the French St. Leger (Prix Royal Oaks) and the French Guineas. It has often been asked, says the Paris corresponnent of “The Times,” why English horses were barred from all French classics except the Grand Prix. The rule barring foreign horses from the French classics was made in 1833 as a means of protecting French breeding, but it is now felt, after the successes of French horses in England this season, that the French breeding industry needs no further protection.
