AUSTRALIAN ARMY DEFAULTERS ILL-TREATED

Canberra, Oct. 29. The Board of Inquiry, headed by Mr. Justice Reed, has found that soldiers under suspension in Army detention barracks have been illtreated and only one such barracks in Australia appeared satisfactory from the aspects of administration, discipline, training, and accommodation. The report, which was released to-day by the Army Minister, Mr. Forde, found that the very high delinquency rate in the Army at the end of 1942 and early in 1943 was most alarming. A more liberal outlook in granting compassionate, occupational, and seasonal leave might have reduced considerably the number of offences.
