JUBILEE CUP FIELD AT WHANGAREI
TWEEDSMuiR’S CLAIMS FOR FAVOURITISM
(Special) Auckland, Oct. 20. Heading the field in the Whangarei Jubilee Cup on Friday is Bonny Pay, a very good sprinter indeed and one that has yet to prove himself beyond spr.nt jdurneys. lie has been carrying big weights of late, his last outing, being under 9.8, giving weight only to I Sleepy Fox. in the sprint at Isllerslio j last Saturday week. In that event the | Pukekohe galloper was right in the i picture up to the distance. Bonny [ Pay is in two events on Saturday and i should give a good account of himself in whichever race is chosen for him. One of the most dangerous candidates for the Whangarei Jubilee Cup is Tvveedsmuir', who has been very consistent since he staged a comeback a: Avondale six weeks ago. At that track he ran second at a mile, and defeated 1-Lppodrome at a mile and aquarter, only to lose first money through interference. He then went on to gather in the big event at Thames and followed this up a little more than a fortnight ago by running Cracroft to a head in the Mitchelson Cup. On tliis form Tweedsmuir may prove to be the winner of Friday’s contest. Engaged in tile two main handicap races at Whangarei are Bonny Pay and Billy Peach, and on their form to date they should be more at home in the Manaia Handicap, which is run cvei a mile and takes the place of the former open six-furlong event, which never filled satisfactorily. If reserved toi this contest they should fight it out. Lord Dink had been a long time off the winning list until he sprang a surprise at Tauranga the other dav. when he decisively defeated several more fancied candidates. In the Manaia Handicap there are two or three recruits from the hack ranks that may'help to make it very interesting. Old Scot has been suc- ’ cessful at Whangarei meetings in the ' past but he has yet to be tried out | over a mile. Odvaals and Bronze Man will not be bothered by this | journey and in the case of the latter |he is a possibility, for he was far from being disgraced among the select band of sprinters at the recent Auckland meeting. Bronze Man is quite capable of capturing the mile on Friday. Among the contenders in the Maiden Stakes on the opening day at Whangarei on Friday next is Aylesbury, a promising three-year-old with undoubted speed. The race is run over five furlongs, and smartness out of the barrier is what will pay dividends in this contest. Another prospect in this race is Jouster, one of G. Cobb’s string that showed some form at Avondale last month. The Spring Plate at Whangarei on Friday is another maiden affair, and in this there may be a warm proposition in Light Opera. She is a speedy filly and in view of the lack of opposition her chance appears to be a gilt-edged one on Friday. Most opposition mav come from improvers in Yusuf and Beau Devoir.
