BOOKMAKING CASES IN WELLINGTON
FINES TOTALLING £650 ( P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 29 Fines totalling £650 were imposed by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., on three men and a woman on gaming charges. Percival Murray White, aged 39, a skating rink proprietor, was visited at his flat at Oriental Parade at 12.35 p.m., Saturday, stated Senior Detective Compton. Detectives found the doors and windows locked and the curtains fully drawn. They had to break a window to enter. White had then taken £7Bl 5s in bets over the telephone. Mr. Joseph, for the defence, said that White intended to give up bookmaking. The volume of betting was not unduly large, as there weie eight race meetings that day. His client suffered from physical disabilities. Why was it that men with physical disabilities always seemed to take up bookmaking? the magistrate asked. He then imposed a fine of £250. Edward John Shore, a'jcd 54, a tramway motorman, who "was found in Lambton Quay at 9.50 a.m. and said he had taken bets from friends and acquaintances and had not used the telephone, was fined £l5O. He had a previous conviction for bookmaking. Archie Mac Lea Clareburt, aged 32, a driver, who was visited at 11.44. had taken bets amounting to £209 10s over the telephone. He had also been before the Court before for bookmaking. A fine of £2OO was imposed. Winnie Gladys Chisholm, aged 41, a domestic, occupier of the premises where Clareburt had been operating was fined £5O for permitting the premises to be used as a gaming house.
