AUSTRALIAN BASIC WAGE ISSUE

Recd. 9.40 p.m. Canberra, Oct. 29. The Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) to-day denied a report that he had promised to ease wage-pegging legislation to permit 10s weekly increase in the basic wage, but revealed he li ad asked the Australasian Council of Trade Unions to apply to the Arbitration Court for an examination of the basic wage. The Council is meeting in Melbourne to decide whether to accede to the request. Mr Chifley said he made no promises and gave no undertakings in regard to the Victorian transport dispute.
