‘MR. SEMPLE SHOULD LEARN TO BEHAVE HIMSELF”

<PA.) Auckland, Oct. 7. “It is reasonable to expect that a Minister of the Crown should set an example to the community by conforming to the regulations of any district he is visiting and not expect preferential treatment,” said the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, commenting on Mr. Semple’s statement concerning the City Council’s refusal to grant a permit for the screening of two housing films last night. Mr. Allum said the City Council would pay no attention to the vulgar abuse. It was time Mr. Semple learned to behave himself.

Mr. Allum explained that the council had been asked by Mr. Skinner, secretary of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee, to permit the screening of films at Mr. Semple’s meeting. Because of the regulations prohibiting the showing of pictures on Sundays, permission was refused and Mr. Skinner subsequently said that there had been a misunderstanding and only slides would be shown. No permission was needed for this.

Mr. Allum added that the courts he]d that the exhibition of moving pictures constituted entertainment, and for many years the council had refused permission for the public exhibition of films on Sunday.
