SCHOOL FANCY DRESS BALL

(0.C.) Waitotara, Oct. 6. The Waitotara Hall was packed to capacity on the occasion ot the recent school children's fancy dress ball. The programme consisted of folk dances to music supplied by Mr. I. N. Lett, and ballroom dances. A feature of the programme was the senior grand march, which was well performed and drew generous applause from the onlookers. Al the conclusion of the children's programme Mr. I. Parsons (chairman), on behalf of the school committee, thanked all those who had asslsted, with special reference to the work done in training the children by the staff (Mr. I. N. Lett and Misses L. Matthews and D. Pap* worth). The headmaster also thanked everyone for assistance and explained that the proceeds (about £5O) would be expended on the building up of a much-needed school library. The supper arrangements were capably carried out by a ladies' committee headed by Mrs. I. Pareons. WOMEN’S BOWLING CLUB.

There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Waitotara Women’s Bowling Club. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs. Dobie; vice-president, Mrs. G. Armstrong; secretary, Mrs, Penfold; committee, Mesdames Doyle, Zimmerman, Bunker, Grove. TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Waitotara Tennis Club was held recently, and there was a good attendance of members. The following were elected to office for the ensuing year: President, Mr. E. Hurley: vice-presi-dents, Mr. H. Richardson and Miss B. Scott; secretary, Miss S. Verry; treasurer, Miss L. Matthews; club captain, Mr. S. Savage; vice-captain. Miss O. Verry; committee, Misses J. Lee and D. Papworth, Messrs. G. Carrington and J. Ryan. BIBLE CLASS The Waitotara Bible Class held a very enjoyable social evening at the home of Mrs. S. Warner. There were more than 30 present. The evening was spent in table tennis, billiards, competitions, community singing, and vocal items. The competitions, ar. ranged by Rev. Milmine and Mr. Taylor, caused much amusement. The soloist for the evening was Doris Whi:o. TELEPHONE HOUKS A petition has been signed and sent to the authorities asking for an extension of telephone hours. W.D.F.U. There was a fair attendance of members at the September meeting of the W.D.F.U. Mrs. A. Verry presided. It was decided to have a competition for a Christmas cake as a means of rasing funds. Mesdames PLeahy and Mahoney were tea hoslosses and Mrs. Forsyth was in charge of the brlng-and-buy. Mrs. McPhail, Wanganui, whom members are always pleased to welcome at their meeting, was the guest speaker. She spoke of the Waitotara branch of the W.D. which she and the late Mrs. Polson had formed over nine years ago, and of the wonderful progress which was made in its early ; stages. At the end of the first year the branch had a membership ot 64. She hoped tile branch would continue its good work and that members would take an interest in the meet, ings. Mrs. McPhail spoke on several other matters in connection with the activities of the W.D.F.U., and she was accorded a vote of thanks. Results of competitions were as follows:—Madmalade: Mrs. Handley 1. Mrs. Wilson 2, Mrs. Train 3. Flowers: Mrs. Mahoney 1. For the October meeting (he competitions will be for a Hoveling shrub, and six plain white scones. PERSONALS Mrs. E. Parsons, Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Parsons, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Walkin. ton were in Wellington for the Parsons—Lockhead wedding. Visitors to the Waitotara School recently have been Miss Lowrie (Departmental Supervisor of Infant Work), and Miss Robertson (Area Physical Education Instructor). Miss M. Bell, of the corrc ✓ jndence school, Education Department, Wei. llngton, lias been visiting pupils in this district. Mrs. McPhail, Wanganui, was the guest speaker at the September meeting of the W.D.F.U. Another visitor was Mrs. Forsyth, sent, a foundation member of the branch.
