FIRES THREATEN TOWN IN QUEENSLAND
Recd. 6 p.m. Brisbane, Oct. 3. A series of fires raging in banana plantations is threatening the township of Hapleton, on the south coast of Queensland. The fires are out ot control and have swept to within 2003 yards of the township. Heavy damage has been done to plantations and to valuable stands ot hardwood. Isolated homes are being evacuated and there have been many narrow escapes. So far few houses have been destroyed.
