GAS CUTS ETC
Sir, —May I through the courtesy of your columns, air a grievance. I see by to-day’s “Chronicle” that “a cut-off in the Wanganui gas supply on Saturday was averted after all night work at the gas works ” Why is it that the residents of Castlecliff are always cut off at these times and not the city? Our supply was completely cut off from 1.30 p.m. until after 4.45 p.m. Is our money not as good as the city folks or is it because we now belong to the Patea electorate that we are always penalised like this? Not so long ago Castlecliff residents were without gas from Friday at 5 p.m. until the following Tuesday, but not so the City.
The same applied to electricity in the streets some time ago. All the street lights were on as far out as Gonville but poor old Castlecliff had almost a total black-out. I know those in authority are up against various odds but surely these cuts should be shared by everyone and not so much by one suburb.—l am etc., “CASTLECLIFF PARENT.” Sept. 30, 1946-
The officials at the gasworks advise that the shipment of coal received from Wellington on Monday week was of such inferior quality for gas-making purposes that it resulted in a heavy shortage of gas i n Wanganui by the week-end. This affected the whole gas system and would have resulted in a heavy diminution of supply for Castlecliff had not preventive action been taken. The inlet to the container at Castlecliff was closed in order to prevent an outflow of gas from the container to the Gonville gas mains. This left the gas in the container on Saturday available to the residents of Castlecliff only. The container did not become empty, nor was a cut-off from the container to the consumers made at any time. The gas container at Castlecliff was replenished on Saturday night—Editor.
