TE ARGHA PROSPECTS USEFUL FIELDS ENGAGED

(Special) Auckland, Oct. 3. An even field of a dozen remains in the Somers Memorial Handicap at Te Aroha on Saturday, and recent rurrning suggests chances for Tweedsmuir. Hippodrome, Royal Charter and Conspiracy. In the open sprint at Te Aroha a much bigger field will line up and the class is quite good. After his recent racing at Ellerslie and Avondale, where he was second to Black Beret, Theophilus may be the hardest tobeat. Of his opponents the most .likely will be Our Bridge and the very easy Paeroa winner, General Mentoith. One of the most interesting contests at Te Aroha will be the hurdles, in which Eiviada appears to have excellent chances after his good second |last week to Representative. The I dashing Irish Fox is getting high up • in the weights and this may take some lof the dash out of him, although with his pace and jumping ability he may slay on better than anticipated. The i th’’ee-year-old filly Brierly only just jwc.i her division of the Trial at Paeroa 'last week, but as that was her first pace for a long time she should be much improved when she is produced lin the Trial Handicap at Te Aroha. |She fought on well last week to dejfeat another promising three-year-old in Chatacre, who comes in on Saturday on 61b better terms. Brierly is a three-quarter sister to that good horse Master Brierly. CHANCES OF SWANEE Another three-year-old filly not without, prospects in the Trial at Te Aroha is Swanee, who ran Kenwyn to half a length over six furlongs at Thames recently. This half-length was on sufferance only, but as Hunting Camp (a winner last week) was half a dozen lengths back in third place it would seem as if there was some value in the form. Another juvenile maiden, Aylesbury, who revealed a lot of pace last season, was third choice in the Trial at Paeroa last week, but when the barrier went up he merely walked out of the tapes and was quickly tailed off- The only two-year-old with any form engaged at Te Aroha this week is Ticotime, who ran a third and a second (to Demonic) at Avondale last, month. Oxi these two good showings the Broiefort filly should have prospects on Saturday. Among her opponents is Parisian Gold, who failed to reproduce at Avondale the galloping ability he displayed in the parade at Ellerslie, in mud and heavy rain, six weeks ago.

The manner in which Bran tome won his two mile races in the hack class at Avondale suggested that he could win in any company. He carried 8 9 and 810 on those occasions. He has been paid up for in the eleven furlongs

Somers Memorial Handicap and the mile Waimala Handicap at Te Aroha this week and he will be tried out. He has the minimum impost in these two engagements and if a suitable rider can be procured for him he should run well forward.
