TRANSPORT LICENSING AUTHORITY SITS AT MARTON

(6.C.) Marton, Oct. 2. At a sitting of the Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. J. P- O. Skoglund, in Marton yesterday, a licence to operate a half-ton truck within a fivemile radius of Marton, and with a right to run to Lake Alice, was granted W. Rushton. Applicant, who was represented by Mr. J. R. L. Stanford, produced in evidence a letter signed by 20 business people in the town stating that they considered a parcels service, such as Rushton intended to operate, would be of benefit to the community. An objection to the granting of the application was lodged for the Road Transport Alliance and Marton carriers by Mr. E. W. F. Gohns.

Three witnesses gave evidence' in support of the application- Mr. D. B. Sadden, accountant, described the proposed service as an economic necessity. B. S. Gillespie, wine and spirits merchant, and H. Y. Cameron, draper, also considered the new service would prove of benefit to the town.

W. Taylor, a carrier whose licence covered the whole of the Rangitikei County, and who operated in the Marton borough, was called bv Mr. Gohns, who lodged an objection o" behalf of the alliance. His firm had never refused cartage, although at tunes there may have been delay, said Taylor. He objected to the application as there were already three others operating in the town.

Two other carriers. W. Parkes and W. H. Davies, were also called by MrGohns.

- “I fail to see how the operation of a half-ton truck would hurt any men operating larger vehicles,” said Mr. SXoglund.
