WANGANUI BECOMES TRAINING CENTRE FOR LIP-READING

MISS JOYCE SEWELL AS i TUTOR OF TEACHERS

Mrs. F. Dunlop, general secretary of the League for the Hard ot Hearing, was a visitor to the league's rooms on Tuesday evening for the purpose of meeting the Wanganui committee.

The league’s board of governors, having come to the conclusion that the urgent need for teachers of lipreading could only be met by establishing a teaching centre in the North Island, sought the advice of Miss Schultz.

“Her recommendation was that Wanganui should become a training centre and that Miss Joyce Sewell's services be made available for that purpose," said Mrs. Dunlop. “This advice was adopted by the board of governors and I am here to ask you to join with us to this extent. We believe that Miss Sewell is eminently suited for this special work, botli because of her success as a teacher of lip reading and also because of her wide cultural outlook and her allround capacity and temperament.'' “We are indeed gratified to know j.hat our tutor has won to so high a place in the esteem of the board and we are anxious to fui r the work, not only locally but o„ a Do-minion-wide basis. We are, therefore, happy to co-operate in the manner requested and shall be pleased to make the branch available for tfiat purpose,” said Dr. H. L. Widdowson, president.

The Rev. W. H. Nicholas said that the branch felt honoured at being selected for this important work, and the members would be very glad that Miss Sewell’s work had gained wide appreciation. It would probably result in retaining Miss Sewell for much longer than the branch could possibly hope to do if left to itself.
