WITH THE CYCLISTS D. ADAMS WINS GRUELLING RACE
(By
“Free Wheel.")
On Saturday last the Feilding-Apiti 50-mile event was run off, Wanganui being represented by K. Stevens, W. Pidwell, D. Adams, G. Harrison, H. Hodson and W. Beswarwick. All are agreed that it was a gruelling contest, several very steep hills being encountered, and the gravel road in places was shifty and dangerous. Three wheels broken during the race bore mute testimony io the conditions and spills were not rare. • • • • Riding a solid race all the way. and most of the latter naif of it solo, D. Adams won by a fairly wide margin, and bore out this writer’s contention that if he had not used himself up so much in trying to "burn up” the field in the Palmerston North-Bulls race a few weeks ago, he would have been doser up than fifth at the linnsh. First man to the turn, earning a trophy for that distinction was the hardy veteran "Hags" Hodson. He can be considered as one of the unlucks ridels, a.--, he chased Adam.'- over the last -’<• miles, and it was only in J the last stage:-, when almost in sight! of home, that he was caught by the! scratch men, and so lost second place. Harrison punctured with less than | half the journey covered, while going I well. l>s record in the longer races this season is very good. That he is kern to carry it further is evi-1 deuced by the fad that he was out
training on Sunday morning at an hour when most people would still be asleep. Another excellent, ride went to the credit of K. Stevens, who, from the scratch mark went, very close to collecting fastest time honours, being just shaded over the last bit by Roy Dutton. Stevens was unfortunate in that he was left in front with 500 yards to go, and had to do lhe "donkey work" in the sprint. Spectators and his fellow-marksmen were loud in I their praise of his excellent lapping, and also in his good sportsmanship in not protesting against a breach of ■ rules committed by Dutton. During the race Dutton had to replace a wheel, and though this was in order had he done it himself, he was materially assisted in the changei over by one of those following the race, thereby saving valuable time. After the race Stevens was approached by lhe officials, and asked if | he wished to enter a protest. His answer was in the negative. While Steven's action was highly commendable it was the duty of the officials to make a decision on the matter, the rules being quite clear on tt.e point in question. X< * e ♦ As in the last two distance races "Joe” Allen rode well from ./i "break" mark, but once again found that those associated with him were! i*)t quite good enough to enable them I to hold lime against Un* srtali-h * * • • Next Saturday will see the contest for tin* cub captain's trophy, which I race w ill be an excellent "wind-up" I for the annual Palmerston NorthWanganui race set dow n for Saturday |
