Mr. Colin Horsley, the young ptanCollege with a Royal College ol Music Scholarship, was soloist recently with the 8.8. C. Symphony Orchestra when Sir Adrian Boult conducted the first performance ol’ Humphrey Searle’s piano concerto in D minor. Colin Horsley, reported in Britain :r be fast becoming one ot its inosbrilliant pianists, broadcast in New Zealand when he was only fifteen. In 1938 he went to London, where he studied under Herbert Fryer. He gave his first 8.8. C. broadcast on New Year's Day, 1943, when he was 21. He has played at concerts all over Britain and gave a memorable performance at last year’s “Prom’’ season.
Humphrey Searle wrote his piano concerto under Army conditions during 1943-44, when he was engaged in training Allied parachute troops. Somewhat Liszt-like in style, it gives the pianist scope for virtuosity. The composer studied at the Royal College of Music with John Ireland, and wOn a travelling scholarship. He later studied with Anton Webern in Vienna, and his recently-produced “Night Music” was written in memory of Webern.
