SOCIAL AND PRESENTATIONS AT KAI IWI.

On her retirement from the teaching profession, Mrs. E. M. Gray, who for the last seven years has been headmistress of the Kai Iwi School, was farewelled at a social evening held at Kai Iwi on Saturday. The chairman (Mr. W. R. Papworth) presided at the opening of the social and then asked Mr. E. P. Rountree, who had been chairman during Mrs. Gray’s term of office, to take over proceedings. In paying a tribute to the guest, Mr. Rountree said that during Mrs. Gray's term at the school she had pul through over 50 pupils. The conduct, also the work of the school was of a very high standard, and bolh the principals of the Technical College and the Girls’ College were always pleased with pupils from the Kai Iwi School. Mrs. Gray was one of those instrumental in trying to got a swimming pool and had donated £5 towards the fund, and had also made a trip with committee members to the Paparangi woolshed to interest the residents in the project. She was outstanding in her work with the Maori children. Mrs. Gray had always worked enthusiastically in organising concerts and bazaars and making goods for sale at the stalls, to raise money for the prize giving. Every break-up day she had given the children a lea party, much to their pleasure and enjoyment. Mrs. Gray was one of those people who did not mind putting in overtime in helping the pupils and preparing their work. Besides this

she saw that the grounds and gardens were kept in good order and during the Christmas vacations she journeyed from Wanganui and looked after the school grounds ready for the opening day. On behalf of the parents Mr. Rountree presented Mrs. Gray with a silver teapot and cake fork, and from the Maori children she received two glass bowls and chinaware, presented by Mr. Nikorina Brooks, and also a lovely vase from the school children. Opportunity was taken to farewell
