A fortnight ago a meeting was held in Marton with the idea of resuscitating the Marton Wrestling Club. The meeting, after discussing the subject at length, subsequently adjourned, for the purpose of collecting information concerning the whereabouts of gear and material owned by the club. A furl her meeting has now been convened by the president of the old wrestling club, Mr. Ken Fowler, for Thursday night, in the Marton Jockey Club room. It is hoped that sufficient enthusiasm will be shown by members of the old club as well as new members to come along and set in motion again the activities of this body. PRESENTATION TO RETIRING SCHOOL TEACHER. In recognition of 27 years' faithful service as infant mistress at the Marton District High School, the school committee had decided to open a public subscription list for Miss E. V. Nicol, who recently retired owing to ill-health. It is felt that many expupils and supporters of the school would like to contribute towards a presentation, to be made at. a valedictory evening to be arranged at a later date. Subscriptions may be left at Messrs Lewis and Cameron's, Mr. A. Grade's, or with the secretary, Mr. G. Horton Smith. CROQUET CLUB. The winners at the Marton Croquet Club’s flag 500 evening last week were Mesdames E. Sayers, O. Brabyn and Messrs C. Henderson and A. The runners-up were Mesdames Osborne, T. Jackson, F. A. Hempieman and A. Stantiall. The competitions were won by Mesdames Simcox, S. Hunt and D. Lea. WORK OF ACCLIMATISATION. An insight into the work of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was given to members of the Marton sub-committee on Saturday night, when they were visited by the chairman and members of the Wellington Council in an informal conference. At the request of the chairman of the Marton sub-committee, Mr G. L. Marshall. the council chairman, Mr. F. C. Pratt, presided over the meeting. The other council members who travelled to Marton for the meeting were Messrs E. A. R. Jones, H. Goodwin, W. A. R. Jones, T. R. Boyes, C. A. Marsden, and C. C. Holmes. “The council has now been established for more than 60 years," said Mr. Pratt in his address, “and In that time it has made undoubted progress.” This progress, l\e said, was mainly due to the spirit of enthusiasm of the voluntary workers in the society. “If the work of the socoiety was taken over by a Government body there would be a falling away and finally an extinction of the fine voluntary spirit which has characterised its activities and it would be a tremendous pity,” he added. Mr. Pratt explained that during the war, restrictions had resulted in reduced expenditure, with the result that the society was at present in a strong financial position. “We are not going to fritter that money away," he said. “Plans have been made for widepsread spending for a productive end —(o have fish in our rivers and game in our countryside."

When M. Pratt had concluded his address, members of the council who had specialised knowledge of the activities of the society gave brief explanations of their work to the meeting. COMING EVENTS.
