NEGROES INJURED IN RACIAL RIOT IN ALABAMA

Reed. 9 p m. New York. Aug. 10. A fight between two white ex•nldiers and a negro touched off a race riot in Athens. Alabama, in which between 50 and 100 negroes were injured, reports the Associated Press. A witness said old and crippled negroes were among the many knocked down and trampled on by white mobs, which were estimated to total 2000 men. At one stage negroes were chased off the street. About ten whites were arrested and a semblance of order was restored by nightfall after law enforcement officers from all over northern Alabama poured into Athens. The local State Guard Company was mobilised to keep the peace. All stores and cinemas were closed at 6 p.m. Gangs of whites tried to enter several shops in which there were negro customers, but were barred by the proprietors, who said they would shoot if Ihe gangs came in.
