Disappointment at the "reluctance or apathy" of New Zealand girls married to American ex-servicemen in trying to secure help regarding divorce proceedings instituted by their husbands, was expressed in Wellington by Mrs. D. Sviatko, chairman of the committee of wives set up to investigate avenues of possible aid in defending the divorces. Mrs. Sviatko said it seemed unfair that the few girls who were courageous enough to take the initial steps to secure help in this matter should not he backed up by the many others similarly placed. The petition which was to be sent to President Truman through the New Zealand Government had so far been signed bv onlynine girls, although Mrs. Sviatko had hoped to secure 100 signatures. "It seems that the wives here against whom divorce proceedings are being taken by husbands in America will reap the benefit of the early work being done by the few,” said Mrs. Sviatko. She added that the Kiwi Club in Auckland had been requested to assist by asking anv Auckland wives, against whom divorce proceedings were pending, to support the petition.
