SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Advice has been received by the Red Cross Society that Her Excellency Lady Freyberg has been pleased to accept the offices of Commandant-in-Chief, Red Cross V.A.D.’s, and patroness of the New Zealand JuniorRed Cross. The offices of patron and patroness of the Auckland Travel Club have oeen accepted by their Excellencies the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C.. and Lady Freyberg. The former Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newell, and Lady Newell were patrons of the club in Auckland before they left New' Zealand. Miss M. Gillanders, matron of the Rotorua Sanatorium, is .soon to retire from that post, although her retirement is delayed through the exigences of the service. Miss Gillanders, who has served 20 years in her profession in Rotorua, has been matron of the sanatorium for 12 years, and before that was on the staff of the King George V Hospital. Registered Nurses’ Association At the July meeting of the Registered Nurses’ Association, held in the Red Cross Centre rooms, Guyton Street, an interesting talk on British hospitals was given by Dr. Hughes Johnson. Miss E. E. Willcox (president) presided over a good attendance -of members. Forthcoming Card Evening A card party, arranged by the women’s section of the Wanganui branch of the New' Zealand National Party, will be held on Wednesday evening next, July 24, in the R.S.A. Hall. Players are asked to note the time, 7.30 p.m. To reserve tables ring 2362 or 4910. The name of the candidate. chosen by postal ballot, for the Parliamentary election, is to be announced at the party.
Red Cross Trainees’ Social Evening With the object of keeping trainees interested in the activities of the Red Cross, the Wanganui, Gonville and Durie Hill sub-centres of the Red Cross have joined in forming a club, and meetings are held once a month. On Thursday, members spent an enjoyable social evening in the Red Cross rooms. Songs were sung by Miss Rae Barnett and Miss Pam Barnett, and recitations were given by Mrs. F. Reid and Miss Wiggins. Miss Jackson gave a talk on her trips on the hospital ship Oranje. Brief outlines on their visit to the conference were given by Mrs. E. W. E. Carter and Mrs. R. L. Garden.
