WOMENS HOCKEY
NO SURPRISES. There were no untoward results in the ladies’ hockey competition matches played in Rangitikei district. The results were.— United 3 v Huntcrville 0. Bulls 6 v. Swifts 1. Kia Ora 2 v. Huia 0. Better finish in the circle enabled Uniide to win from Hunterviile on Marton Park. Otherwise it was a very even game, and some b. iglit hockey was seen. In the first round these two ‘.earns fought a draw. The goals were shot by L. Patterson (2) and J. Patterson. The umpires were Miss M. Wilkie and Mr. V. Hawkins. At Feilding, both the home teams lost, Huimai winning by a wide margin and the Marton team( Kia Ora, by two goals to nil. 111-luck still continues to follow the United Club as far as injuries i»'e concerned, the latest casualty being L. Patterson. Wheij she receiv'd a nasty smack across the bridge of the nose she was forced to retire early in the first half. She, however, had netted twice for United prior to her injury. She recovered sufficiently to enable her io resume her place in th % team following the interval. MARTON HARRIERS WIN RELAY RACE FROM FEILDING. The annual inter-club harrier relay race between Feilding and Marton was revived on Saturday, after a lapse of five years due to the war. Two Marton teams and a Feilding team took part, the first runners leaving the Feilding Post Office, the race finishing at the Marton Post Office, one hour 56 minutes 55 seconds later. Marton A were i’.ccessful in retaining the Moss Cup, Feilding being second ana Marton B third. After the run, harriers and officials were the guests of the Mai ton Club at afternoon F. Hill, captain of the Marton Club, welcomed the visitors and Mr. H. Moss, the donor of the trophy, referred to the spirit of friendly rivalry existing between the two clubs. He presented the cup to the A team captain, F. Hill. Mr. R. Lamberton spoke on behalf of the visitors and promised to bring a stronger team next year for the contest.

Ihr. 56min. 40sec.; Marton B, Ihr. 56min. 55sec. RETURNED MEN WELCOME HOME. SCOTTISH SOCIETY’S COMING EFFORT. Plans for the big Scottish Society's welcome home social and dance to men and women of the 2na N.Z.E.F. were advanced a further stage at a meeting of the Marton Scottish Society last week. Friday, AugiuL 30, was decided upon as the night and both the Palmerston North and Wanganui Pipe Bands will be in attendance. It is the intention of the bands to combine and march from the Post Office to the Victory Hall, the mecca of the dance. Each band will contribute two items during the evening. Simpson’s orchestra from Wanganui has been engaged to supply the dance music. All returned servicemen and women of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. and partner will be admitted free on presentation of their R.S.A. badge. A subscription of 5s (men) and 2s 6d (ladies) was made for others. It was explained that the increase in pr.ec ±or admission was necessary to meet the expenses incurren in seeming the services of the two pipe bands. Chieftain A. Stuart, presided over Messrs G. R. Dallas, W. Gow, A. Seymour, A. Campbell. A. Christie, and J. W. Gibson (secretary). BASKETBALL.
One A grade and two B grade basketball competition matches were played on Saturday in Marton. A friendly game was arranged between the Turakina Maori Girls* College and Broadway A and won by the College by 10 goals to seven. The competition matches resulted: Grade A: M.D.H.S. 17 v. Marton 16. Grade B: Primary 10 v. M.D.H.S. 6; Chenille 10 v. Broadway 5.
Next Saturday B and C representative teams will travel to Wanganui to play third and fourth grade lepresentive teams against Wanganui. A Marton team is going to Palmerston North next Saturday to play in a tournament. The following team nas been chosen to represent Marton: Goal, L. Phillips, J. Grant,»M. Jamieson; centres, M. Down, J. Armstrong, L. Barr; defence, J. Wrigglesworth, S. Rivers, J. McDonald. Emergency, P. ivendrick. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB. TOPICS FROM RECENT MEETING. A short talk on the maintenance of tractors was given by Mr. C. V. Zajonskow.ski at the monthly meeting of the Murton Young Farmers' Club. He ' divided his talk nto tnuce main headings, lub: icat ion, trials and tuning up. This proved most interesting and much valuable information was given members. It was decided Io accept the oflei for a talk on the Heritage Movement, by a prominent speaker, when details oi llie movement would be given. It was reported that the annual meeting of tne federation had decided to build a short-term block at Massey College and a recreation block at Lincoln College, as a Y.F.C. memorial, on the understandiiT” that members of the Y.F.C. be given preference for short courses. talks. The club decided to order 50 copies, and those requiring the booklet to advise the secretary, Mr. M. Gray. Price Is Gd. Owing to the lateness of the season the district sheep dog trials have been postponed, and they will be staged by the Waimarino Club on behalf of the dist ict by March 31, 1947. Mr. D. R. McFarlane, delegate to the District Committee meeting, renorled that the district committee had set up a sub-cimmittee to go into the question of publicity each year, and to prepare a programme setting out the club and district activities for the year. The librarian. Mr. W. B. Gray, stated that, the books the club had ordered from England had arrived and he passed them round for members’ perusal. MARTON GUN ULI 15. Another successful outing was the concensus of opinion of those who took part in the Marton Gun Club's monthly shoot on Saturday. Conditions were favourable, except tor a shower in the middle of the afternoon. The standard of shooting was. again very good. The supervisor was Mr. N. Crabbe, captain of the club. Mr. C. C. McDonald acted as referee, Mr. C. Rofe as handicapper, and Mr. R. Wilson as secretary.
Results were:— Five-bird eyeopener: Seven shot four birds, and in a shoot-off, G. Lampp won. Thirteen entries.
10-bird sweepstake: C. Role. D. Godfrey, L. H. S. Marshall and J. Perry divided the prize. Fifteen entries. Gimcracki shoot, five-bird: R. Haise, G. Lampp, J. Perry, R. Hammond tied. The shooe-oft was won by J. Perry. Fourteen entries. First miss out: I. Brice, five birds. Eighteeen entries. FIRE BRIGADE EUCHRE. At. lhe Marton Fire Brigade euchre tournament the men’s prizes wcic won by Messrs C. Henderson and W. Moss and women’s prizes by Mesdames a. Hunt and a. Urnstein. A competition was won by Mrs. Ornstein. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The new arrangements, as they affected Ohakea, were outlined by tne piesiuent, Mrs C. A. Tidy, at a recem. meeting of the Marton Piunket Society. Throughout lhe war, said Mrs. Tidy, the Marton Piunket nurse had seen all mothers connected with tne station, as part of the Bulls subbranch. Now, however, the Feilding branch had taken over Ohakea, bringing their territory to the river as the boundary. Marton and Bulls were naturally sorry, said Mrs. Tidy to lose the Ohakea mothers, but as bulls was a ve.y busy branch, the time thus made free would be well spent. Mrs. Tidy also told of the steps taken to keep the Marton branch going during the illness of the nurse, Miss Suddaby. Marton was indebted to the Feilding committee and ntirse lor the assistance. Those present at the meeting were Mesdames Tidy (in the chair), .Ingle, Stevens, Stanford. Barry, Hall, Kingdon, McDonald, Nicol, Ward and Miss Cook. There were also present ttiree newly-elected members, .Yesdames J. Cash, W. H. Cornfoot and F. F. Hardy. The president welcomed these members and expressed the pleasure of the committee in this accession of strength. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOT WITH SANSON. Two teams from the Marton Miniature Rifle Club travelled to Sanson on Thursday night to shoot a Matawatu of pons, 'lhe following scores were competition match. The Marton A team lost by tljree points, but the B team won by a similar number of registered:— Marton A.- A. Clark 129, E. Green 138, L. Horgan 134, M. Soler 127, H. Bailey 133, N. Whale 136, T. The Shailer Challenge Shield was also at stake, the live highest scores of either side being the winner. This was won by Marton by 678 points to 673.
After supper had been serxed by the homo club, Mr J. Fagan welcomed the Marton team and congratulated it on its good performance. Mr. P. Gibbs, Marton Club captain, replied, thanking lii(> Sanson Club for the very pleasant evening and congratulating Sanson A on its win.
