DEALINGS IN GOLD SHARES

EXCHANGE HOLDS INQUJRY Recd. 6.30 p.m. London July 17. The Council of the London Stock Exchange at present is conducting an inquiry into dealings in the Saint Helena (Orange Free State) gold mines shares in London on May 22. It is alleged that certain members of the Exchange received shares at 52s 6d each before the dealings began, and that these were placed at approximately £5 a share when the selling opened, with the result that very large profits are alleged to have been taken. Protests were lodged by other members of the Exchange, ' whose clients bought at top prices. Saint Helena shares at present are quoted at 73s 9d.
